CSRA RESA

The CSRA RESA Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP) is a program of study that integrates school-based and work-based learning by collaborating with local business and industry.  Apprentices are awarded the opportunity to earn a high school diploma, post secondary credential/diploma, and certificate of occupational skills.  YAP re-enforces a well-educated and highly skilled workforce.  Melvin Stewart,  We invite you to read through the information below to find out more about the CSRA RESA Youth Apprenticeship Program.

What is Youth Apprenticeship?  YAP is a program designed to prepare highly motivated high school juniors and seniors for the high tech, high skilled jobs in tomorrow's work-force.  YAP involves school-based learning and work-based  learning that provides students with competencies needed to begin a career in business or industry.  Apprentices are required to continue their education after graduation from high school by attending Augusta Technical College, Augusta State University, Paine College, or other post-secondary institutions.  Please click here for a Youth Apprenticeship Overview.

Who may apply?  YAP applicants must be a rising junior or senior, at least 16 years old and have a valid drivers license.  Students must have a 2.5 GPA, have good conduct and attendance records, be on track towards graduation (technical/career/college prep), and be recommended by two teachers and a counselor.  Students will be required to take a series of courses related to their career plans and must agree to continue their education in technical school or through the college/university system.  They must also be able to provide their own transportation from school to their work site and agree to tests, such as drug screening.

How do I apply?  Applicants must complete the attached YAP application packet.  Applications may also be acquired at participating high schools or by contacting Melvin Stewart, CSRA RESA YAP Coordinator.

How are apprentices selected?  Applicants are screened by high school faculty to ensure that qualification criteria is met.  Recommendations are required from two teachers and a school counselor.  Final selection is determined by the business and industry following their interview with the student.

What area businesses participate in YAP?  Business and industries are contacted on a continuing basis.  For a current list of participating businesses, please contact Melvin Stewart.
