About Lori Shappel

Lori earned a Bachelors Degree in 1989 in Special Education. She began her teaching career in Albany, New York where she taught students with Learning Disabilities. Lori then moved to Tampa, Florida where she worked with students who had Orthopedic Impairments. After Florida she relocated to Georgia where she earned her MEd in Orthopedic Impairments and Visual Impairments at Georgia State University College. During her teaching career, she has been involved in curriculum development, Co-teaching, AAASP – an adaptive sports program, a member of an assistive technology team, a volunteer with the STAR Riding Program, and the co-author of a writing program. She has received awards that include Teacher of the Year, Gail Hendricks Volunteer Award, and Outstanding Student in Special Education.


Lori provides vision education services for seven different school systems in the CSRA. Functional vision evaluations, media assessments, and technology evaluations are provided and assessment driven educational programming is implemented. Consultation services are provided to students, school systems personnel, and parents. She provides instruction in the use of low vision devices, assistive technology and appropriate accommodations for specific visual disabilities.
Lori also provides professional learning opportunities for school personnel and other individuals in the CSRA area. She is part of a CSRA Region Vision Consortia.
