About Kathy Hughes Williams
Kathy completed her Master’s degree in Visual Disabilities at Mercer
University in Macon, Ga. She has provided vision education services in a variety
of educational settings. Kathy began her career at the Academy for the Blind in
Macon, GA, the state residential school for students with visual impairment.
During her years at the Academy, Kathy’s opportunities included teaching health
education, instructing students in Braille, coordinating the low vision program,
and serving as the Junior Class Sponsor. After moving to Columbia Co, Kathy
provided services to students with vision impairment in the local school system.
She received the Columbia County Special Services Teacher of the Year Award in
1994. In 1998 Kathy completed the Low Vision Rehabilitation Certification
Program from Pennsylvania College of Optometry.
Kathy now enjoys the opportunity of providing vision education services to
multi-systems within the CSRA RESA district. Functional vision evaluations,
media assessments, and technology evaluations are provided and assessment driven
educational programming is implemented. Consultation services are provided to
students, school systems personnel, and parents. She provides instruction in the
use of low vision devices, assistive technology and appropriate accommodations
for specific visual disabilities.
Kathy also provides professional learning
opportunities for school personnel and other individuals in the CSRA area. She
is part of a CSRA Region Vision Consortia.
